The Cloisters

The Cloisters, also known as the Met Cloisters, is a unique museum located in Fort Tryon Park at the northern tip of Manhattan, dedicated exclusively to the art and architecture of medieval Europe. Designed by architect Charles Collens and opened in 1938, the museum is a blend of modern construction and authentic medieval elements—featuring portions of five European cloisters that were transported stone by stone from France and Spain and reassembled in New York. The building’s Gothic and Romanesque-inspired galleries, chapels, and arcades are arranged to evoke the atmosphere of a medieval monastery, providing an immersive setting for its collection of more than 5,000 works, including sculptures, tapestries, illuminated manuscripts, and stained glass.

Surrounded by meticulously recreated medieval gardens and offering sweeping views of the Hudson River, The Cloisters invites visitors to step back in time and experience the beauty and spirituality of the Middle Ages—all within the heart of New York City. “The gardens, galleries and chapel make for a beautiful mini getaway without leaving the island”. 212.923.3700 metmuseum.org
