Hippo Playground

Originally built in 1937, this playground became a destination in 1993 when a community group commissioned a designer to create the hippo sculptures. This playground offers an inviting mix of wooden and green metal play equipment, swings with safety surfacing, slides, a sand pit, spray showers, picnic tables, and benches—all designed to spark imagination and outdoor fun. With its public restroom, drinking fountain, and an indoor Parkhouse available for private events, Hippo Playground is more than just a place to play; it’s a hub for neighborhood celebrations and seasonal community events, including summer art programs, concerts, and the annual Halloween Parade. The large hill on the east side becomes a popular sledding destination in winter, while the shaded, leafy setting provides a cool retreat during hot summer days. The Hippo Playground is a beloved urban oasis for all ages.. riversideparknyc.org
