General Grant National Memorial

General Grant National Memorial, commonly known as Grant’s Tomb, is the final resting place of Ulysses S. Grant, Civil War general and 18th President of the United States, and his wife, Julia Dent Grant. Situated on a promontory overlooking the Hudson River at Riverside Drive and 122nd Street in Manhattan, this granite and marble mausoleum stands as the largest of its kind in North America. Designed by architect John H. Duncan and completed in 1897, the memorial combines classical architectural elements and is a striking example of the City Beautiful movement. Inside, visitors can view the sarcophagi of Grant and his wife, as well as displays honoring Union soldiers and key Civil War battles. The site serves not only as a tribute to Grant’s leadership and legacy but also as a symbol of national unity and remembrance for those who fought to preserve the United States. Today, the memorial welcomes thousands of visitors annually, offering insight into the life and enduring impact of one of America’s most revered figures. nps.gov Photo: King of Hearts/Wikimedia Common/Public Domain
