The American Folk Art Museum is New York City’s only museum dedicated exclusively to folk and self-taught artists. Founded in 1961, the museum celebrates the creativity of individuals whose artistic talents developed outside formal training, showcasing a collection of over 8,000 objects spanning from the 18th century to contemporary times. Its holdings include paintings, textiles, quilts, sculptures, and unique Americana, highlighting both traditional folk art and contemporary self-taught art forms. The museum also houses significant archives, including the largest collection of works by the renowned self-taught artist Henry Darger. Admission is free.
