Adventure Playground

Adventure Playground, located near Central Park’s West 67th Street entrance, is a destination for families on the Upper West Side. Designed by architect Richard Dattner and opened in 1967, it was the first adventure-style playground in Central Park, pioneering a new approach to play spaces by moving away from standard equipment in favor of custom-designed features that encourage exploration and imaginative play.

The playground is best known for its wood pyramid climber, concrete and granite climbing mound with a tunnel and slide, and an water feature that becomes a favorite during warmer months. Maze-like elements, interconnected structures, and a large sand area invite children to climb, crawl, and invent their own games, making it a haven for creative and active play. Some areas are wheelchair accessible, ensuring inclusivity for all visitors.

Nestled on a hill with views of the park, Adventure Playground remains a spot for locals and visitors alike, offering a blend of challenging physical activities and opportunities for imaginative adventures. Located near the Central Park W. 67th Street entrance. centralparknyc.org
