Best Viewing Spots to See the New York City Marathon
The best places to see the NYC Marathon in Central Park are concentrated in the final miles of the race, particularly from Columbus Circle to the finish line at West 67th Street on West Drive, where the atmosphere is electric and runners push through their final stretch. Spectators can access this area via Broadway at West 61st or West 62nd Street, or from the east side through the Central Park path near Heckscher Fields, with all entrances subject to screening.
Before the runners enter Central Park, Fifth Avenue between 86th and 90th Streets delivers a more relaxed but equally inspiring experience. The incline here is subtle but challenging, making it one of the toughest—and most motivating—sections for competitors. The crowds lining Engineers’ Gate (at 90th Street and Fifth Avenue) are famously supportive, with chants of “You’ve got this!” echoing across the pavement as runners fight through fatigue

Finish Line Viewing Areas
The most popular and accessible spot is the Standing Spectator Area, which runs from Columbus Circle into Central Park up to approximately 500 feet before the finish line. This zone allows free public access and offers excellent views of runners approaching the final mile, though no chairs or personal seating are permitted. For a more premium experience, Grandstand Seating is available near the finish line at West 67th Street, requiring purchased tickets for reserved views. Entry for grandstand ticket holders is at West 62nd Street and Broadway.
Key Access Points and Tips
Spectators entering from the west should use the Broadway at West 61st or 62nd Street entrances, while those coming from the east can enter via the Central Park path by Heckscher Fields (Kickball Field #3). Public transit access is convenient, with the A, C, D, and 1 trains stopping at 59th Street–Columbus Circle, just steps from the viewing zones. Due to high demand, early arrival is recommended, and access may be limited by authorities based on capacity. There is no spectator access north of the grandstands within the park, so positioning within the designated areas is essential.
Don’t forget the marathon’s Opening Ceremony will take place on Friday, October 31st at 4:00pm. For access to this event use the entrance at Central Park West at W. 63rd Steet to get to this free event. Seating will be be on a first-come, first served basis until the grandstand is filled. The event, featuring the Parade of Nations, concludes at 6:30pm with a fireworks display.
